Ok so I am the proud owner of a 2001 Yamaha R1, it has just 2000 miles....thats not a typo, which brings me to my problem it sat for a long time and it won't idle, so i drained the old gas rode it a little while and it still won't idle. So I decided to clean clean the carbs, so I have everything apart the carbs are taken off, and I decided that I would get on here and see if anyone had any tips or tricks when i disassemble the carbs, adjustments, special jet tools etc. All help would be greatly appreciated. Here are the pics of my progress.
I had the same problem on my '01. I recently got back from a 15 month deployment in Iraq and my bike sat the whole time. When I got back the bike wouldn't even start. After taking the carbs apart and cleaning them, the bike would start but would not idle. (I could ride it though, there was a slight stumble in the lower RPM range.)
I finally got fed up and just took it it a dealer who told me the tank was corroded and needed to be re-sealed. The fix was about $700 total and I haven't had a problem since.
recently got a 2001 R1 that has not been running for about 4 years.
I have cleaned the carbs (twis), replace the fule pump and yet, I get backfire as I ride the bike. the bike idle perfectly, has custom tail pipes and has the original jets.
