: Handling of the '05 - '06 R1
asphaltpilot 07-23-2006, 02:41 PM Guys and gals,
My GF will be taking the MSF course soon and it's either come down to her buying a used bike, or her taking my R6, and me buying another bike.
I definitely do not want to rule out a 1000cc bike, and the R1 is the bike of choice for that category. However, if I can't get the handling/nimble characteristics from a R1 as I can with my R6, I'm better off with another 600 or 750.
How's the new generation R1's in the realm of handling and flickability as compared to '02-'03 600cc bikes?
Thanks!
aar0ncee 07-24-2006, 11:41 AM The limitation in flickability will mostly be from the bigger displacement inertia of the engine. I hardly doubt you will notice any difference unless your are on a super tight and technical course. The R1 is a bit more physically demanding and has a pretty shitty power curve out of the box. A PC3/exhaust is def needed to smoothen it out. You could get away with it by just regearing it -1 upfront, but it will forsure put a smile on your face with PC3/exhaust modification. Either way, the regearing is 100% needed as it is geared way to high even for most tracks. My GF has a CBR1000rr and I spent the day riding it. I can tell u that the R1 has more noticeable exceleration and is a bit more physically demanding to ride... atleast, mine does in comparison. However, the 1000rr was immediately easy to ride. Wheelies nicely and handles great... and it looks great aswell. If I was rich, I'd have my R1 up on stands to take out and rip thru my normal places but the 1000rr makes a better street bike when it comes to litre bikes. R1 was def built to be run around a race track.
however, comparing any of the new litre bikes to a 03-05 R6 isnt needed... theres no way my 04 R6 puts a big of a smile on my face as my R1.
Jason,
What is the bike going to be used for ? mostly street or track ?
Aaron covered it pretty well. I would have to say that you would I would be happy with just about any new sportsbike these days from 600's--- the new Trumper 675 looks nice-----GSXR 750 has a great reputation as the all round bike and then the new 1Ks are just mind blowing in speed and handling.
Paul.
asphaltpilot 07-24-2006, 11:00 PM Thanks guys.
The new bike would be street legal ONLY because my girl will be getting a bike, and she'll be riding 99% street riding. It it wasn't for that, I'd probably go track only, but realistically, I will be looking to doing 50% track, 50% street riding.
I'm just trying to weigh my options. Thanks again!
aar0ncee 07-25-2006, 06:10 PM After riding my R1 again today after the flogging of the CBR1000rr... mine def has more power and wheelstanding capabilities... probly because of the modifications... one thing i did notice tho is that the CBR wants to endo when u jump on the brakes and dont scoot back on the seat... the R1 is much more stable and doesnt do that when hard on the brakes unless u lean over the front...
unless it was being used for track only purposes, i wouldnt think of buying a 600 these days. the litre bikes just get it done much better and put a bigger smile on my face. i would prolly run a litre bike at the track if i could afford another one and didnt already have an R6 in full race trim.
asphaltpilot 07-26-2006, 09:18 AM Sweet. Thanks for the replies. They help out a lot.
LiquidR1 07-27-2006, 02:59 AM but if you could just wait 2 more months. the 07 r1 will probably be released sometime in september. Coming off the heels of the new r6, you can just about bet that the new r1 will be the top liter bike in 07.

I do hope you're correct, though :)
Chunk 07-27-2006, 12:53 PM J, you wouldn't have a single regret in buying the R1 except for kicking yourself for not doing it sooner. Guaranteed.
kidone 08-25-2006, 07:00 PM Hey guys Im the new guy on the block and I noticed this page is pretty similar to what I was thinking so lemme give a little input. I used to have a 05 R6 and just recently switched over to a 05 R1. The diference in power is phenominal and the only thing I notice is the handling requires a little bit more muscle but its still sort of nimble like my 1st love. I also noticed its a bit punishing on the bumps compared to the 6 but hey I can deal with it. But yea man it isnt as bad as I thought it would be cuz Im still tackling the turns well and I hope the results are the same for you if you get a R1. Godspeed!
Sean714 01-05-2007, 01:56 PM went from a 04 R6 to a 06 R1........still can't get the smile off my face.....but I def need to regear. I'm thinking -1 in the front should take care of it.
