So I'm hoping to get a 2003 R1 for my first bike. I am going to get some practice on a dirtbike this weekend and I will be going through a MSF class on the 12th so... My question is that it has a power commander and I know that's supposed to make it more powerful but is there a map out there that decreases it's power? So I can get used to riding and then switch it back when I feel comfortable enough?

It is designed to increase performance. I noticed a smoother less sharp when hitting a bump on gravel road throttle response with one though. You could make your own map but starving bike of fuel at a given RPM to decrease power will make it run way lean due to all the extra air and lack of fuel. Very bad for it. Best bet is to shift early. Your 150 hp bike is making less than half that probably at 5000 RPM's. It will be a combination of babying your bike and staying safe. Take care man. P.S. Good Luck doing a figure 8 at that MSF class as a new guy on an R-1. Feather the clutch the whole time, let it out all the way and you will be going way to fast. Mine went 10-12 MPH without giving it any gas till I broke it.
