: catalytic converter removal???
ghostdog 06-03-2006, 10:11 PM Met this guy today with the same bike, he had a Two Brothers exhaust, he claimed he took out the catalytic converter with a screw driver and ALOT of elbow grease took him several hours of so he said. I really liked the way it sounded that really deep grumble but not obnoxious like a D&D....Or is there another alternative like possibly getting a mid pipe without the catalytic converter in it??? Not quite sure if I'm actually wording this right....I'm just "DEEE DEEEEEE"
R1HOOLIGAN 06-04-2006, 10:46 AM It only takes about 1 hour from start to finish. It takes longer to remove and re-install the pipe than it does to knock out the cat.
Just disconnect the pipes, pull them out of the way and remove the "Y" pipe. I put my pipe in a wooden vise on a workbench. The cat looks like an aluminum "honeycomb" about 2" in diameter & depth. It's quite brittle. I drilled out the center with a 1.5"wood bit and chipped out the rest with a screwdriver. I then "honed" it out with a 2" wire brush on the drill. Just take your time and don't damage the exhaust gasket. Then re-install. It'll save you about $130. Again, the biggest pain in the ass is taking off and re-installing the tail section. Just take your time and it really shouldn't take more than an hour or so...it's well worth it. Just have a buddy "spot" you so you don't lose your cool (I get too impatient sometimes!), and to help line the pipes back up.
Enjoy!
ghostdog 06-04-2006, 10:56 AM Having a body Spot always seems to work...of course it's even better when there's beer....just gotta watch the "beer consumption rate"...:beermug :beermug :rollin
shortyr6 06-05-2006, 11:36 AM it took me a little less than an hour to gut the cat. if you dont want to do that you can go buy a akra "y" pipe and it does not have the cat in it.
ghostdog 06-06-2006, 01:00 AM Hey Shorty, How long did it take you, the whole process that is?
Oh BTW, I'm relocating from Texas to MIami within the week, The Army has decided to make me a recruiter......:hyper :hyper
I have some family out there in Tampa. Which I plan to visit on a regular basis. Maybe we can meet up and you can show me the local roads. And some :beermug :beermug :beermug
sxlova07 06-06-2006, 06:56 AM Whats the benefit of gutting the cat, other than letting thru more air? Will the y-pipe cool down due to the increase of airflow? Also those two brothers exhaust already have that rumble to them even with the stock cat, makes the bike sound badass.

I found that the heat seems to be less without the cat. I also have Two Bros pipes and now it sounds much more badass at higher rpms...sounds about the same until you "romp" on it. My neighbor says it sounds kinda like an F1 car in the distance....:hyper

I have been thinking about wrapping the mid-pipe to reduce the roasting effect I get when I am stopped. But if gutting the cat produces the same effect that might be another option. I am satisfied with how the two bros sounds now, actually think its a lil loud for me at times so I dont want to make it louder.
descendingfear 09-11-2006, 01:41 AM What changes in sound does it make if you still have the stock pipes??
sxlova07 09-11-2006, 07:56 AM its because gutting the cat increases the flow of air..
although I am curious if the lack of back pressure afterward is a bad thing?
RJ4106 09-14-2006, 10:09 PM I removed the cat from my mid pipe and i have a yoshi pipe on my bike... it did take about an hour and alot of pounding with a hammer and a big screw driver, but i am happy with the sound and difference it made.
ghostdog 09-14-2006, 10:12 PM Hey Bro...that topic got really hit on on the other forum...you know that one not to be named....lol
I had access to an air hammer...took me about 45 min start to finish. ....Gotta love power tools.
LiquidR1 09-15-2006, 04:00 AM i figure id post up on behalf of anyone not mechanically inclined. The akropovic y-pipe will work with the stock or all other aftermarket slipons just incase anyone is wondering what kind of y-pipe to buy. I have the akro y-pipe with jardine rt-one slip ons. Although they are not cheap.
