Hi I have a (2001 r1) 17000miles, I have owned it for a week, only ridden the bike once. And that was a 250 mile journey back from where I brought it.
I cannot take it back (sold as seen)
Now the problem I have was when I was riding it back guy said it needed coolant so I topped this up, also chain appeared to be very slack and mainly when decelerating made a horrible crunching sound.
I rode the bike back very slow I just assumed the bike needed some TLC.
The guy never topped coolant up so I thought it has been neglected. By the way oil is very dark in colour.
I have since lubricated chain with PJ1 and adjusted it to about 45mm slack. I took it out yesterday and sound is still there. I brought it back took side casing off to reveal front sprocket tried the nut, its all tight everything seems to be in order, even teeth are ok. Then I noticed rear engine mount slightly loose, tightened it and thought this must be it, this chatter this grinding noise when decelerating. I have taken bike once again for test ride and the bloody noise is still there.
I have taken fairing off so when I ride bike I can touch certain areas to see if I can feel vibration etc.
What I am mainly concerned about is I have tried to diagnose exactly what the noise is when I hear it etc. When the bike is ticking over it sounds a beauty, when I put clutch in no difference in any sound what so ever. This is stationery of course. When I ride it theres a slight vibration on accelerating but nothing much to worry about. When I change down in gears especially fourth that is when you notice this horrible grinding rattle noise, pull the clutch in and it goes. I am led to believe fourth gear has a problem. Now to me it kind of sounds like this horrible noise is coming from mid to front of bike, but with any noise it is so hard to work out exactly where.
Please please any ideas.
Thank you
