Well heres the story.
Went out for a ride today did a couple wheelies down the freeway and we pulled over to a side street that people stunt on and parked there for a few minutes...
anyways when I start it back up there is a HORRIBLE sound from my engine people that were 20' away all stoped talking and came over.

When it started it sounded like something came loose and was smacking the piston? I shut it off after about 2 seconds of running. I have had a REAL noticable tick (louder than the "normal" tick from what i can tell). I just took my bike in this last week for its 8,000 mile service and they said the tick was "normal".

It's gonna be interesting to see if they warranty this cause I'm sure its not gonna be cheap and I'll be bikeless for at least a couple weeks (if i'm lucky) :weeping

Has anyone heard of this happening on a 05 R1 with 8,000 miles??? (and before you flame I did do a search)

My best guess at this point is that it threw a rod or dropped a valve.

And would the wheelies have messed it up (again don't flame I'm just trying to get some feed back before I take my bike in tomorrow).

I know there was the issue with the older gixxers with the oil pickup and starving the engine of oil, but my understanding these are pick up in the rear. The only thing I'm getting at is *caugh* sometimes *caugh* I go to redline with my wheelies.

Just a couple things I will point out to you :D

1st: :welcome to the board

2nd: Thats real bad news about your bike, I dont think Yamaha will give you waranty , but the guy who preformed your service should be doing something for you.

3rd: we dont flame people that much on this board. ( unless that utterly deserve it ):lol

yeah, dont mention the wheelies... i dont think the oil pick up should be an issue. i've heard of one engine ticking like yours and then basically destroying itself. it was an R6 tho. since you took it in for its service, and they checked out the ticking, they prolly wrote it down in the notes as "normal". especially if you pointed it out... the fact that it was documented, and now your engine is dead... it becomes their problem... goodluck with the bike, and keep us informed!

I just got back from looking at my bike...wish I had my camera with me. Engine is TOTALLY apart.

And the part that broke ....The valve guide. A chunk of it, about the size of an eraser off a pencil, cracked off and went bouncin around on the piston till it finally "welded" itself to the piston.

The mechanic said his personal guess is the guide was cracked when yamaha pressed it in and it just took time to fall apart. They have a couple pages of parts their trying to get warrantied, but the guy that needs to call yamaha was out today but he'll be back tomorrow so I get to hurry up and wait some more :weeping

Well that is great news (not about the waiting bit :p) at least you will get this all fixed up under warranty. :D
