So one of the issues with my '01 R1 is that I have to start it with the kickstand up and using the clutch because the bike thinks its in gear. Currently the neutral light does not light up. Is there a neutral switch or something? I am sure its not a complicated issue...slightly annoying cus I have to sit on the bike while it warms up. Thanks

yeah..I am sure that is the case....but if I can get the part and bring it somewhere to put in, it would save me alot
Try cleaning the switch before you replace it. Sometimes they get all 'gunked' up and stick a little.

where is the neutral switch located? I browsed through the owners manual and couldnt find a mention of it.
When you put the sidestand up, it activates a switch. Take a look near the pivot of the sidestand and you should see a booted switch.
Not saying that cleaning will solve the problem, as the switch itself may not even be the problem. But it is a good place to start. The service manual should have the troubleshooting guide in it.

The neutral switch is threaded into the rear of the engine near the swingarm pivot. It has 1 sky blue colored wire connected to it.
