This is a good question. I had the same thoughts when I first started to ride as well.

In general, you haven't gotten a straight answer, because there is not one. The point at which you need to shift depends on many factors: are you accelerating, decelerating, cruising, racing, do you have stock teeths on your sprockets, are you entering a turn, what performance mods do you have that will change your powerband, and on and on...

These different situations will cause you to need to shift at different RPMs. So my humble advice is not to worry about what RPM you are at (besides, you should looking at the road). instead worry about where in the powerband you and what situation you are in. Most power can be found between 6k up to 10 or 11k. If you in a relaxed cruising mode, then where you are in doesn't matter. But if you need to move in a hurry, then stay in the higher rpm so you have more torque to get out.

In the future you will just go by feel. for now, pay attention to the cagers, stay alert, in have the power on tap as you may need it.

stay safe.

Casual driving. Upshift to 2nd about 20 3rd 25 4th 30 5th 35 6th 40. This is owners manual mellow driving doing mostly 3 grand or below. Racing find your bikes peak horse power rpm and shift slightly past it, (that will be higher HP than what it falls to if you shift right at peak) in other words leaving you at higher HP in the next gear if that makes sense. Your looking at around 11,000 rpms for an 09 R-1.
